Also at the workshop, delegates will spend time discussing issues such as government support for people with disabilities; the role of Associations of People with Disabilities and implementing the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities…

According to Hoang Chi Trung, Director General of the Department of International Organisations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Viet Nam currently has about 6.7 million people with disabilities, accounting for about 8% of the population. “In November 2007, Viet Nam joined the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, in order to strengthen the protection and promotion of the rights of people with disabilities, and to remove barriers so that people with disabilities can confidently integrate and contribute to society. Since then, Viet Nam has implemented many specific measures, including passing the Law on Persons with Disabilities in 2010”, Mr Trung said.

Also according to Mr Trung, as an active member of the UN, Viet Nam has been contributing more and more to the international community’s efforts to promote and protect human rights. Viet Nam has joined 5 of the 9 important international human rights conventions, and is always striving so that fundamental rights and freedoms in Viet Nam are increasingly respected and better guaranteed.
