US television honours refugee girl in a wheelchair

An American television star has devoted a special film scene to honouring Noujain Mustaffa, a Syrian refugee girl who travelled to Europe in a wheelchair.

Noujain Mustaffa, 16, is just one of hundreds of thousands of Syrians who have made the perilous 6,400 km journey to Europe in recent months. However, the optimistic spirit of the girl with a disability who has to travel in a wheelchair has drawn the attention of the world’s media.

According to the BBC, Noujain travelled through Croatia to Slovenia on her way to Germany to meet her brother. She said that while still in her home town of Kobani, she learned English by watching the American television series Days of Our Lives.

“I wake up at 8am every day to watch the show. It is a very good show”, Noujain said. “But the main character I love has died”.

Noujain’s regret made comedian John Oliver think. He decided to include the girl’s story in the closing segment of the latest episode of the late-night show “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver”, about Europe’s treatment of migrants.

”How could you not want this girl to live in your country? We have a real surprise just for you”, he said, introducing the special scene in which Noujain’s favourite character, EJ DiMera, played by actor James Scott, came back to life to reunite with his former love, Sami.

“Coming back from the dead, that is not hard”, EJ said to Sami, played by Alison Sweeney, in the programme broadcast on HBO on the evening of 27 September. “Do you know what is hard? Going from Syria to Germany”.

“Have you seen what migrants have to go through?”, Sami asked in reply.

“I read an unbelievable story about a 16-year-old girl in Kobani called Noujain Mustaffa. Yes, Noujain Mustaff”, EJ said, looking into the camera with a smile.

Actor Scott later sent thanks to the Last Week Tonight programme, Alison Sweeney and Noujain on Twitter.
