At the opening ceremony for the new school year at Hanoi University of Science and Technology, a new student who is paralysed in both legs but achieved excellent entrance results was presented with a gift and encouragement by the Minister of Education and Training.
This morning (24 August), Phung Xuan Nha, Minister of Education and Training, attended the opening ceremony and welcomed the 62nd intake of new students at Hanoi University of Science and Technology.
At the ceremony, Dinh Phuong Nam, a student with a disability who is paralysed in both legs and must use a wheelchair but achieved very high entrance results, was honoured to receive a gift and encouragement from the head of the education and training sector on the eve of the new school year.
It is known that, from the end of Year 9, Phuong Nam suffered from a spinal cord tumour; surgery to remove the tumour left both legs completely paralysed. However, he still strove to pass the entrance exam to Le Hong Phong Specialised High School, Nam Dinh, and then achieved his dream of becoming a student in the Faculty of Information Technology at Hanoi University of Science and Technology.
Phuong Nam is the first student with a disability to be admitted directly to Hanoi University of Science and Technology, with a high combined score of 25.5 in three subjects under the A1 exam group and a high school record of three consecutive years as an excellent student. In addition, Phuong Nam also received a scholarship and financial support from Hanoi University of Science and Technology for students in special circumstances.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Mr Phung Xuan Nha cited the story of new student Dinh Phuong Nam to remind young people of the need for passion and creativity, and at the same time asked the university’s Board of Rectors and teachers to create the best possible conditions to help students realise their ambitions.
