Launching the “Beauty of the Crescent Moon” contest 2015

In April 2013, with the message “Beauty lies in diversity, not in a “perfect body”, but in resilience, intellect, self-confidence and the hidden talents within each person”, and with the wish to encourage people with disabilities, especially women with disabilities, to remove their sense of inferiority, be more confident in showing their abilities and speak up for themselves, with the slogan “My body, my talent” – “My body, My talent”, the Hanoi Association of Youth with Disabilities (under the Hanoi Youth Union) coordinated with a number of organisations to successfully organise the “Beauty of the Crescent Moon 2013” festival.

“Beauty of the Crescent Moon 2013” was organised for the first time in Vietnam and created an impressive social impact, attracting the attention of the media, agencies and organisations working with and for people with disabilities, and the public in general, to the issues facing people with disabilities today. The significance of the festival went beyond its original aims of helping everyone in society understand more, love more and remove prejudices about people with disabilities, and helping people with disabilities be more confident in themselves and find more joy in life. What was truly special was that, through this series of events, it was the “able-bodied” people who attended in person or learned about “Beauty of the Crescent Moon 2013” through the media who were themselves inspired by the young people with disabilities, to cherish the values of life and what they are fortunate to have all the more.

Following the success of the first festival, and to meet the needs of many young women with disabilities across the country, on the morning of 18 April 2014, at the Melia Hotel, Hanoi, the Hanoi Association of Youth with Disabilities (HYDA), the Centre for Supporting Community Development Initiatives (SCDI), the Centre for Sustainable Health Development (VietHealth) and the Centre for Creative Initiatives in Health and Population (CCIHP) announced and launched the “Beauty of the Crescent Moon 2015” festival.

With early planning for the festival's main and side activities, “Beauty of the Crescent Moon 2015” promises to be organised more professionally, with more varied activities and a stronger focus on the issues facing people with disabilities in Vietnam.

The Hanoi Youth Union will accompany the “Beauty of the Crescent Moon 2015” festival
