After failing the university entrance exam in 2014, Chao Peng studied hard to take the exam again this year. Peng’s efforts were not in vain, as he was finally admitted to a law university in Chengdu City, Sichuan Province.

Although he has lost both arms, Peng is able to use his feet skilfully.

At first, Peng had difficulty making friends because many people thought he was unusual and uneducated. However, after proving himself, Peng received the support of all his classmates. He recently arrived at university to enrol and officially begin his student life.

Although he can do many things with his feet, eating in the canteen is still a problem for Peng because he needs someone to help carry his food and put it on the table.

When someone suggested he should take his food back to his room, Peng refused. Faced with the stares of the students at the university, Peng just smiled and paid them no attention.

This photo series records Peng’s first day at university. Peng got up early, before 7 a.m., feeling excited and eager to meet his friends.

Although his parents have moved to live near the university so they are ready to help Peng when needed, the young man who lost his arms still decided to live in the student dormitory. Peng’s roommate also helps him a great deal, for example by squeezing toothpaste onto his toothbrush.

Every morning, Peng takes about 18 minutes for personal hygiene and 20 minutes to walk the 2.1 km to the university lecture hall. Peng said he plans to study further at other universities to obtain a law degree with high marks.
