The dance of people with disabilities

The Candoco dance company from the UK came to perform a set of three contemporary dance works “Studies for C”, “Set and Reset/Reset” and “Imperfect Storm” at the Hanoi Opera House and the Ho Chi Minh City Opera House on 29 September and 3 October.
Chris Brown, Director of the British Council in Vietnam, said that 3 of the 8 Candoco artists coming to Vietnam this time are people with disabilities. They have studied, constantly created and risen up over more than 20 years. Candoco’s performances have inspired audiences in more than 50 countries around the world. This time, Candoco has come to Vietnam and will captivate audiences with the work “Studies for C” with lively, constantly changing Mexican music and costumes bearing the words “I would rather die on my feet than live on my knees” (I would rather die standing than live on my knees) of the Mexican revolutionary Emiliano Zapata. And while “Studies for C” tells a story in a narrow space, “Set and Reset/Reset” opens up a free and soaring imaginative space for the audience. The dance does not highlight any one character; each artist is like a note in a highly variable symphony.

Meanwhile, “Imperfect Storm” is like a dance drama, with a storyline, dialogue and dance. Choreographed based on Shakespeare’s play“The Tempest” (The Storm), “Imperfect Storm” is a combination of free-spirited contemporary dance language, the humour of the dialogue and the expressions of the characters, colourful stage costumes and the theatrical elements of drama.
