One night while giving a talk in Texas (USA), the young man without arms or legs happened to meet the young Kanae, and immediately felt ‘his breath stolen away’
At the age of 33, with a famous career, a dream wife and two lovely sons, life for Nick Vujicic was by no means easy. He was born with tetra-amelia syndrome, meaning he has neither arms nor legs. Yet he has become an inspiration to millions of people around the world through his speeches telling the story of his life. Life blessed him even more when it brought Nick together with the princess of his life, Kanae Miyahara.
In the two books he wrote, Nick told the fairy-tale-like story of his love. According to him, he first met his wife by fate at one of his talks in Texas (USA). That was one night in 2008, when the young Kanae and her sister Yoshie came with their friend Tammy, who had invited the two girls to come and greet him.
“Kanae and her sister had a special beauty, because they were of both Mexican and Japanese descent. Both stood out, but during the talk that day I only looked at Kanae and could not take my eyes off her. I could hardly concentrate on what I was saying”, Nick said.
After his speech, he was stuck among the large audience. Kanae and Yoshie followed their friend to greet him. During the break, Nick had about an hour to talk with Kanae, and that short time enchanted him even more with the very beautiful, confident and kind-hearted Kanae.
“Finally, as they were about to leave, I did something bold. ‘Keep my email address, so we can keep in touch’, I said to Kanae. ‘Oh, it’s fine, I’ll get it from Tammy’ she replied”, Nick recounted the first stirrings of love.
The young man really did not want to miss the chance to get to know her. He very much wanted to say, as if begging a favour, please keep my contact details, but the lessons his father had taught him overcame his infatuation: “All right. Let’s keep in touch”, he said reluctantly.
As soon as they left, their friend texted Nick asking what he thought. He confided: “Kanae is one of the most beautiful women, in appearance and in spirit, that God has given me the chance to meet. She stole my breath away”.
Right after that, Nick had to travel elsewhere. On the plane, his mind drifted with thoughts of Kanae. As soon as he got off the plane, he opened his email and kept opening it again and again, but there was no reply from this girl. He lived in sadness and longing for three months, until the two met again.
As for Kanae, at that time she already had a boyfriend. She also mistakenly thought Nick liked her sister. Even so, her mind was strongly stirred by Nick. She was impressed by his generous autographs and his sense of humour. What is more, Nick was also very handsome. “I had dated some guys, but I felt tired. The moment I met Nick, I was looking for a few different things, and everything I was looking for came together in him,” Kanae shared.
And so Kanae broke up with her boyfriend to come to the special young man Nick. The fact that the young man without arms or legs was in love with a beautiful girl made many people sceptical. Many even asked how Nick could put a ring on his girlfriend. Yet it happened very smoothly and perfectly, thanks to Nick’s creativity: “Darling, may I kiss your hand?”, Nick said to Kanae tenderly on a boat. Just as Kanae felt her boyfriend biting her finger, she burst with happiness when she realised there was a ring on her hand.
“Darling, I love you, will you marry me and spend the rest of your life with me?”, Nick trembled, quite unlike the overflowing passion of his speeches, while Kanae could only cry.
Nick Vujicic also recounted that, as the two were preparing to marry, his parents asked Kanae a very difficult question. Although his lack of arms and legs was not hereditary – his younger brother and sister are both normal – his parents still asked Kanae how she would feel if one of their future children had a disability like Nick’s.
The question did not trouble Kanae: “I think I would face it more easily than you, because when Nick was born, you were shocked and did not know what to do, whereas I already have Nick as a role model, as a guide”, Nick recounted.
According to Nick, he and his wife overcame many obstacles to be together, especially when his company faced a financial crisis, with debts of 50,000 USD. At that time, the two had just become engaged (July 2011) and Nick was trying to prove himself as the breadwinner of the family. Kanae did not care; she said she would go to work to support Nick. On 12 February 2012, the couple’s wedding took place in California (USA). After marrying, Nick focused on his inspirational speeches, while Kanae was a wife who looked after the family.
A year after the wedding, Nick and his wife had a son named Kiyoshi, completely healthy. On 9 August just past, their home welcomed another member, baby Dejan.
“I tell my love story to encourage you to have faith. You should know, if I can have the love I want, then so can you. If that is not enough, then look around you. This world is full of imperfect people, people who are not ordinary, who have found love and a life partner”, Nick closed his limitless love story with encouragement to all those born less healthy than him.
