On 17 April, at the Presidential Palace, President Truong Tan Sang met organisations and outstanding people with disabilities on the occasion of Vietnamese Day for People with Disabilities on 18 April.
At the meeting, Dang Huynh Mai, Chairwoman of the Vietnam Federation on Disability, and other delegates reported to the President on the situation of the community of people with disabilities in Vietnam, and on the selection of outstanding people with disabilities as role models.
With a network of 17 member associations operating in provinces and cities, the Vietnam Federation on Disability has directed its member associations to step up communication work and raise community awareness about people with disabilities, and to coordinate in bringing support policies and humanitarian, charitable, education and training programmes to people with disabilities.

Along with contributing opinions to the development of State legal documents related to disability, especially the Law on Persons with Disabilities and the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, the Federation’s activities help create conditions for vulnerable groups to develop their abilities and strengths and access employment. However, the Federation’s activities face difficulties because international fundraising is difficult, there is a shortage of full-time staff, and funding for communication activities is limited.
Expressing his pleasure at meeting outstanding role models of resilience, will to rise up and success in life, the President welcomed the Vietnam Federation on Disability’s timely recognition of outstanding people with disabilities across the country, helping to spread their example, step up care work and stand alongside people with disabilities. The President expressed his hope that such exemplary role models would be spread ever more widely so that the community of people with disabilities could make more positive contributions to the country’s development.
The President affirmed that the Party and the State always pay special attention to the community of people with disabilities through specific and practical policies and regimes. Care for the lives of people with disabilities has been stepped up in every locality and region across the country. However, the material and spiritual lives of a significant number of people with disabilities are still difficult. Certain prejudices still exist that hinder the integration and contribution to society of people with disabilities. Some movements and activities supporting people with disabilities are still formalistic and unsustainable.
President Truong Tan Sang called on ministries, departments, sectors and people from all walks of life to continue promoting the nation’s fine traditions and to show even more noble acts in caring for and helping people with disabilities.
