Chau Hoang Tuyet Loan, a female weightlifter with a disability, has had paralysed legs since childhood. In 2010, while preparing to compete in the Asian championship, she discovered she had nasopharyngeal cancer. She could only look sadly at the summons to the Asian championship, and Chau Hoang Tuyet Loan had to withdraw from the competition to receive treatment; just over a year later, she returned to sport and won the championship.
In 2002, although she had not yet taken up sport, the athlete loved wearing sportswear. A weightlifter with a disability at the Vinh Hai Disability Fitness and Bodybuilding Club in Nha Trang advised Loan: “You have a build that suits weightlifting, so you should take it up.” Chau Hoang Tuyet Loan decided to take up sport so she could meet and make friends with people like her. Earning a living by running a café, the athlete turned to sport to find joy in life.
In 2010, while preparing to compete in the Asian championship and the Olympics, Chau Hoang Tuyet Loan discovered she had nasopharyngeal cancer after competing in the national championship in Da Nang. In despair, Chau Hoang Tuyet Loan spent a year on treatment and recovering her health. For most people, having cancer means facing death, but by the end of 2011, Tuyet Loan had returned to training, and she broke the women’s 52 kg weightlifting record in the competition preparing for the 2012 Paralympics.
Recently, the General Department of Sports and Physical Training sent a document to the Departments of Culture, Sports and Tourism of the provinces and cities of Ho Chi Minh City, Khanh Hoa and Tra Vinh about sending five members of the Vietnamese weightlifting team for people with disabilities to take part in the Asian Weightlifting Championship for People with Disabilities (held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from 1 to 7 November). Athlete Chau Hoang Tuyet Loan is one of the members of the national weightlifting team (who achieved outstanding results in the 55 kg weight category) sent to take part in this championship.
