That is the miracle many people still admire when talking about the young man with a disability born in 1992, Cu Huu Hoang. With his proficient computer skills, Hoang has always longed to become a programmer to help others.
Sadness in a foreign land
As a child, Cu Huu Hoang lived in Germany with his parents. When Huu Hoang took his first steps, his parents could not help worrying. As time passed, Hoang’s legs grew weaker every day, and by the age of three, Hoang could no longer stand.
Huu Hoang’s whole family decided to return to Vietnam to live, and at the same time his parents had better conditions to have him examined and treated. When they learned that their son had congenital muscle weakness, his parents cried until their tears ran dry. Hoang could not walk – that was a truth that, many years later, his parents still dared not face.
Huu Hoang and his impressive list of achievements
For a long time after that, his parents took turns taking Hoang to school. “There were days when it rained and my mother drove me to school; because my arms were too weak to hold on to her shirt, I fell off. My mother alone could not lift me back onto the motorbike, so mother and son sat crying together in the middle of the road. That is a memory I will never forget”, Cu Huu Hoang confided.
Although fate was unkind, Hoang never felt sad or desperate because of his illness. Perhaps the only times Hoang felt sad were when his academic results were not as he wished. Hoang lives simply with the thought: “If I cannot walk, I can ‘fly’ to the vast world out there with my own abilities”.
That was what urged Huu Hoang to try even harder so as not to disappoint his parents. Apart from time spent on treatment, Hoang devoted himself to his studies. Throughout his three years of high school, Hoang always earned the title of excellent student. In grade 11, Hoang won first prize in Physics for the Tu Liem – Cau Giay cluster (Hanoi). In particular, in the university entrance exam, he was the top scorer in Group A at a major university with 27.5 points.
The dream of reaching out to the world
A wheelchair may hold back his legs, but it cannot hold back the dream of a young man – to become a truly good programmer. Having been in contact with computers since childhood and with a passion for technology, Hoang chose Information Technology at a well-known university in Hanoi. This was also the door that satisfied the young man’s passion to ‘fly’ out into the world.
Hoang said: “Choosing Information Technology was my own wish, encouraged by my family. Moreover, Information Technology suits my health and satisfies my own passion”.
Hoang always lives optimistically and thinks positively
Hoang spends most of his day at the computer. Hoang confided that a teacher had given him the idea of going deeper into design within Information Technology. Because if he continued as a software engineer, agile hands and feet would be required – and that is the biggest obstacle for Hoang.
His dream of becoming a computer programmer gradually came true. After graduating, Hoang became a software programmer for a large company in Hanoi.
Because travel is difficult, Hoang only goes to the company once a fortnight to receive and hand over work, and works almost all the rest of the time at home on his computer. Huu Hoang shared: “Although I cannot walk, I never feel disappointed in myself; whatever other people can do, I can do too. Each day that passes, I only know to try and try. Like other less fortunate people, I just want to strive constantly to create a better future for myself. And only optimism about the life ahead is the spiritual medicine for people with impairments”, Huu Hoang said.
