A young man with one leg conquers a 2,800km journey by bicycle

(Cong Ly) – Recently, a young man with a disability cycled the 2,800km to reach the Everest base camp.

Ton Huu Tri (27 years old), who lives in Henan province (China), lost his left leg in an accident in 2009 when he was a first-year student. All his plans for the future seemed to collapse. He was very discouraged during a year off school to stabilise his health and spirits.

After graduating from university in 2013, he thought things would get better, but Ton suffered another shock when many workplaces refused to employ people with disabilities.

Unwilling to give up, he turned to his passion for cycling. The first challenge for this young man with a disability took place two years ago. With his prosthetic left leg, he cycled 2,000km from his hometown to Hainan province in just over a month. And recently, on his own, he conquered the 2,800km by bicycle to reach the Everest base camp.

He knew that the Sichuan–Tibet cycling route is famous for its picturesque scenery, but also has many dangerous stretches. But with passion and determination, the young man with a disability Ton Huu Tri successfully conquered this difficult journey.

Ton happily said, “Cycling is very addictive. It helps me regain my courage and confidence in life.” And something even more special is that, on his journeys conquering roads by bicycle, Ton was lucky enough to find his other half; they later married and have a daughter.
